What is a good CCA for my car?¶
A compact 4-cylinder car needs ~350-450 CCA in temperate climates. A V6 SUV needs ~550-700. Diesel engines need 50-100% more. Use this calculator for your specific vehicle.
Can I use a battery with higher CCA than calculated?¶
Yes. Higher CCA provides more starting power and is safe. The battery only delivers what the starter demands. There is no risk of damage from using a higher-CCA battery.
What happens if I use a battery with lower CCA?¶
Insufficient CCA causes slow cranking, hard starts, and in cold weather, may fail to start. It also stresses the starter motor and can leave you stranded.
Why does temperature affect CCA requirements?¶
Cold temperatures thicken engine oil and slow chemical reactions in the battery. At -18°C, a battery delivers only ~40% of its room-temperature capacity. Multiply CCA by 1.2-2.2× for cold climates.
Does a diesel engine need more CCA?¶
Yes. Diesel engines have higher compression ratios (16:1-25:1 vs 8:1-12:1 for gasoline), requiring significantly more cranking power. Typical diesel CCA requirement is 250-350 per liter of displacement.
Are these CCA values SAE, EN, or DIN standard?¶
This calculator outputs SAE (American) CCA values. European EN and DIN ratings are slightly different measurement methods. An EN 500A battery roughly equals 550-600 SAE CCA.
